Oceana Reports Economic Benefits of Mercury-free Chlorine Production
There have always been strong environmental reasons for mercury-cell chlorine plants to shift to mercury-free technology, but a new report by Oceana puts forward a strong business case, as well. The report, entitled “Cleaning Up: Taking Mercury-Free Chlorine Production to the Bank,” analyzes over 115 chlorine plants that are shifting or have successfully shifted from mercury-based technology to weigh the costs of converting against the profits from doing so.
The results are clear: The energy cost savings and the potential to increase capacity due to the smaller cells of the membrane technology allow for substantial savings that can more than make up for the cost of the upgrade. Plants that have shifted to mercury-free technology have increased their energy efficiency by 25 to 37 percent per ton of chlorine produced. Since electricity makes up half of production costs, these savings come out to be millions of dollars. Furthermore, plants that convert to the newer technology generally increase their capacity by 25 percent. Assuming four of the five mercury-cell chlor-alkali plants converted and increased their capacity accordingly, their aggregate sales would increase by more than $300 million over five years!
As the report demonstrates through its calculations and examples, keeping the antiquated technology is costly—to the environment, to public health, and to the company. There’s absolutely no good reason the last four plants shouldn’t switch.

How old does a car have to be to get an "Antique" tag in Georgia?
I am going to buy an '86 Mercury Grand Marquis, and I was wondering how old a car has to be for me to be able to get an "Antique car" tag. I live in Georgia.
To qualify for these tags, your vehicle must be over 25 years old. Or, your vehicle must be designed and manufactured to replicate an antique vehicle.
The registration fee is $20, and there isn't a special tag fee. You may transfer the tags to another antique vehicle in your possession.
If you wish to display the Georgia plate coinciding with the vehicle's model year, you'll have to complete an affidavit, and the vehicle must be from 1970 or earlier. Take the form to a county tag agent office, where a visual inspection on the vehicle must be completed.
Remember to keep the current tags in the vehicle at all times, along with the affidavit.
