Chainsaw art...need I say more. A compelling, yet fast growing art, which employs the technology of a chainsaw, and the ancient style of woodworking. More importantly, this art evolved since the beginning in the 1950's, and has now been a prominent, yet fascinating art that's captured the eyes of many.
During the 1980's, chainsaw art started its initiation into the public's eyes respectively. Art Moe, a chainsaw artist by reputation; began getting much exposure and notoriety in the Lumber Jack World Championships. Luckily for Moe, the championship was broadcast nationally, and more and more lumberjacks began to develop their techniques, styles, and admiration for the art. However, chainsaw art improved and carved its first break in 1987.
Roughly between 1985-1987, it wasn't unusual for numerous lumberjacks to gather and hold their own carving competitions. While would were clamoring at the possibility of chainsaw art gaining national notoriety, it wasn't too far down the spiral road. In 1987, the many artists got their break. The first World Championship chainsaw carving was held, and won by a young 24 year old Barre Pinske.
While this proved to become a major turning point in the art; in 1990 the nonprofit Cascade Chainsaw Sculptors' Guild developed. This prompted numerous countries to follow including the United Kingdom. With all these new developments, most carvers would employ other tools to help glorify their works of art. Interesting enough, even though other carving tools would be used, the chainsaw is still used as the primary carving tool.
Chainsaw art has no doubt, gained a plethora of intrigued individuals, and notoriety around the world. Today, chainsaw art continues to flourish. While most of the attention is specifically on the detail, and piece of the art; new forms have engulfed the attention of many. The new form, "quick carving," still employs the same rules; however most will perform the same art at an amazing rate and quickness. Besides wood, most chainsaw carvers will use ice and any other hard substance for quick carving.
Since the beginning of the 1950's, chainsaw art has developed, flourished, and continues to baffle individuals. It's the sheer excitement and the craft itself, which supersedes the next greatest art. More importantly, it's the buildup, the anticipation, and aesthetic appeal that will ultimately carve its place in history.
